Naval History Meets Harvest Season in New England

Harvest Happenings is an event military families stationed in New England look forward to each fall. The event is held at the historic, Charlestown Navy Yard, home of the world’s oldest warship afloat, USS CONSTITUTION and the beautifully appointed USS Constitution Museum. Each October, USO New England partners the Naval crew of “Old Ironsides” and the Constitution Museum to create an exclusive and special evening of slightly spooky fun for military and their families. Upon arrival, families enjoy a buffet fall supper served by USO volunteers in the museum where they can learn all about the history of the ship while enjoying many wonderful educational and hands-on exhibits. After dinner, the children enjoy interacting with USO volunteers while they make Halloween and sea-themed crafts then it’s off to the ship for “Trick or Treating through Time”. Once aboard, the crew members host stations where kids learn about what life was like on the sea all those years ago. They can see the ship’s “guns” up close, drink from the “grog barrel” and even try a sea biscuit. While aboard, guests also enjoy silly, sea-faring songs and stories by professional entertainers. And let’s not forget the treats…..everyone goes home with a bag full of great things they’ve made, trinkets, treats and a lot of special memories! Sweet Cheeks of Boston and Texas Road House of Danvers have both been generous dinner donors for Harvest Happenings.
